Why do you have unwanted hair on chin, upper lip, and chest?

Many of you have wondered why over time the hair on your upper lip or chin has changed from "peach fuzz" to coarse hair. This can be embarrassing or just plain annoying to have tweeze every few days.

If you are experiencing coarse chin, upper lip, or chest hair the reason may be connected to your hormones. There is a condition that appears in women that results in excessive growth of dark or coarse hair. This hair may grow in a male-like pattern on the face, chest, or back.

This condition is called Hirsutism (HUR-soot-iz-um), Hirsutism is often triggered from excess male hormones (androgens), primarily testosterone. Hirsutism is fairly common and affects between 5 to 10 percent of women. Most women start to experience some type of excessive hair growth after 24 years of age, and likely runs in their families(mother, sister, or another female relative).

What causes Hirsutism

  • The most common cause of Hirsutism is high consumption of processed sugars. Ingesting a high amount of processed sugars & carbs leads to spikes in insulin production. Chronically high insulin levels alter hormone production in women and releases androgens/testosterone.

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is also a common cause of Hirsutism. This condition is a hormonal condition that causes women to produce too many androgens. Other symptoms of PCOS include acne, abnormal menstruation, diabetes, weight gain and fertility problems.

  • Post menopause is common for Hirsutism at a later age. The hormonal changes that take place in your body after menopause may lead to increased facial hair, including a mustache or whiskers.

How do I stop the unwanted hair?

In order to stop unwanted hair you will first need to balance your hormones through diet & lifestyle. Reducing your refined sugar intake can help improve your Hirsutism. Moving your body and incorporating foods or supplements that are high in Zinc, Omega 3-6-9, and Antioxidants.

Schedule an appointment with your doctor if you've done the above and don't see improvement.

Hormone Balancing Supplements

Shaving, waxing and plucking will remove this hair temporarily, but it’s going to keep returning and it may leave dark marks behind.

If you would like a long-term hair solution, look into Laser Hair Removal or Electrolysis. These 2 treatments are very common and appropriate for all areas of the body.
