Skincare Tips for Make-up Girls-Explained

So, you probably saw this post on Instagram. Buttttt.....you need to know why are these tips important. Let me explain why these tips are important. The goal is to wear makeup to accentuate your beauty. Make-up should not be the reason for your skincare issues. Why work so hard sticking to a skin routine only to not protect your investment.

Why Should you use a Primer?

The purpose of a primer is to prepare the skin for your makeup application. This is not a step in your skincare, but simply a first step of your makeup application. Primer creates a barrier between your skin and makeup. Primer is generally used to help your makeup last longer, smoothes the skin's texture, mattify oily areas, fill in fine lines or pores, and hydrate dry areas. Creating a barrier gives your makeup something to hold on to-instead of seeping into your pores.

What to wash your brushes & sponges with?

Washing your makeup tools should happen at least once a week. Over time your brushes accumulate bacteria from the environment and your face. You do not want to contaminate your face and makeup products with that bacteria. Outside of bacteria, brushes also accumulate dead skin cells and oil. Dirty makeup brushes can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

*Also, when you decide to go to MUA-Please make sure they are disinfecting all tools.

So, what should you wash them with?

  • Try shampoo that you no longer like.

  • Try a Face Wash that you want to get rid of.

  • Try a Scent Free Dish Detergent

  • Try a natural soap like Dr. Bronners Castile Soap

How do you match your foundation or concealer to your skin type?

Simple! Matte Foundations are best for Combination or Oily Skin Types. Oily skin types should start with a mattifying primer to help combat oily production throughout the day. Dewy Foundations are best for Normal to Dry Skin Types.

*Concealers are the same. However, using a matte concealer to carve your eyebrows or to use it as a base for your eyeshadow is ideal.

Matching Tips: Ask for samples before purchasing.

Oily Skin or Oily T-Zone Tip: Set primer with loose powder to add extra protection against oil.

My Top Picks! These have great ingredients that include humectants, vitamins, and spf. 👇🏾

What's the reason behind SPF in Primer or Foundation?

SPF( Sun Protection Factor) protects our skin from Ultra Violet Damage. Oh and yes people of color need SPF too!!! We need this protection to combat premature aging and sun damage. Although experts claim that the SPF in Primers and Foundations aren’t enough- I say hey you gotta start somewhere 🤷🏾‍♀️. If you plan on being in the sun for long periods of time try to add a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen to the last step of your skincare before applying makeup.

What the difference between using an oil-based cleanser and a make-up wipe?

Makeup wipers are not formulated to clean your skin. They often just move product into your pores and leaves you with the illusion that your skin is rid of all the makeup. The texture of the wipe is usually never moist enough to get a clean wipe and instead, you tend to become overly aggressive while to removing your makeup. Instead of cause irritation to your skin try oil cleansing. Oil attracts oil therefore its gentle way you can actually breakdown makeup, clear your pores, and hydrate the skin at the same time.

How to Oil Cleanse:

  • Pick a non-comedogenic oil ( Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Avocado Oil, Sunflower Oil, Apricot Oil, Argon Oil, or Jojoba Oil)

  • Apply a nickel-size amount, and massage it into your skin with your fingertips for 30 seconds.

  • Emulsify the oil with warm water until the oil turns milky.

  • Use a microfiber washcloth to gently wipe the oil away.

How do you wash your eyelashes?

Often times we don't pay attention to how well we cleansed our lashes. Use a gentle cleanser that is tear-free(Baby Shampoo) or a Simple Gel-Based to get the leftover makeup and build-up at the base of your lashes. If you wear false lashes take the time to wash off the leftover glue and makeup. Lack of eyelash cleansing will create bacteria buildup. Infection can set up in the eye and lead to irritation.
