What is Lactic Acid and how does it benefit skincare?

Updated: Apr 28, 2020

Most of us have heard of Lactic acid at least once before; whether it be from dairy products or our body releasing Lactic acid when there is a lack of oxygen in our cells, happening most often during exercise. So, how does Lactic acid benefit skincare and why is it such a sought-after ingredient? This is because Lactic acid belongs to a class of anti-aging ingredients called Alpha-hydroxy-acid, derived from milk, and it aids in exfoliation and skin cell renewal.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) are exfoliating ingredients that essentially break down the “glue” that holds dead skin cells together, which leads to a brightening effect on the skin. Other examples of AHAs include glycolic and citric acid. AHAs normally have the strength to exfoliate and improve your skin’s texture, but serums that include lactic acid can also improve your skin's ability to retain moisture, making it ideal for dry skin types.

Bijouskin Brightening Serum is a gentle formula that offers very mild exfoliation, perfect for sensitive skin types. With our 5% Lactic acid formula, the serum smooths texture without leaving a sticky residue. Our Brightening Serum also includes 2% Hyaluronic acid, a humectant that brings moisture to the surface of the skin. Our product also includes plant-derived Tasmanian Pepperberry, which is an anti-inflammatory antioxidant, meaning it protects the skin from sensitivity while reducing signs of inflammation commonly associated as a result of acid use. This product will add much-needed moisture to the skin without being irritating.
