Does diet affect your skin?

Updated: Aug 15, 2022

One thing that can and will affect your skin is your diet! Certain foods can trigger our blood sugar, and it causes the body to release insulin-like growth factors. One of those growth factors are is IGF-1, a hormone that manages the effects of growth. Excess IGF-1 in your blood can cause the sebaceous gland to produce more sebum/oil. As a result of the process, you are increasing the risk of acne and inflammation.

Foods that are common triggers are considered high-glycemic carbohydrates, processed sugars, dairy, saturated fats, and trans fats. These foods have been found to stimulate the production of hormones that can cause excess oil to be created and secreted by oil glands. If you are someone dealing with hormonal acne you may want to adjust your diet & skincare routine. Seek help from your trusted esthetician or dermatologist.

Incorporating low-glycemic foods made of complex carbohydrates may reduce your risk of developing acne. Complex carbs are found in whole grains, beans, and unprocessed fruits &

vegetables. Foods containing zinc, vitamin a & e, and antioxidants are beneficial for the skin.
